When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and lockdowns were enforced across the world, many Igbos living in Russia faced sudden hardship. Businesses slowed, jobs were affected, and daily living became increasingly difficult for students and families alike.

In response to this crisis, the Igbo Community in Russia (ICR) came together in unity to support its members through a well-coordinated relief program. The initiative was carried out under the leadership of the former Interim President, Mazi John Oghachu, whose dedication and compassion brought comfort to many during that challenging period.

With the active participation of community members and volunteers, food items, essential goods, and financial assistance were shared across different cities in Russia. The outreach reached students, workers, and families who were struggling, helping them to stay hopeful despite the uncertainty.

This humanitarian effort reflected the Igbo values of onye aghala nwanne ya — “do not leave your brother behind.” It demonstrated the community’s strength, unity, and willingness to stand for one another, even far from home.

The success of the COVID-19 relief program remains a proud moment in the history of the Igbo Community in Russia, showcasing the power of collective care and leadership in times of crisis.
